Mr. Snuffleupagus had always been my favorite character because of his long, feathery eyelashes , but he's now been replaced by this little natural-haired diva letting the world know that she loves her hair. Sesame Street has always showcased cultural diversity, but what a great message for young African-American girls with natural hair.
I've been natural for the past 24 yrs and the comments I often get are, "well you have 'good hair' you can be natural", or " you have 'wash 'n' wear' hair." That use to irk me, but now when I'm told I have good hair i'm not bothered a bit. I accept that as the truth that it is and every black woman young and old alike, should have the same attitude about whatever hair texture they have. Because hair period comes in all different textures and there's not one that's "good" while another is "bad".
So bravo to Sesame Street for dropping these petals at the feet of all the little black girls who feel their hair is not "right" or beautiful. That's just not the truth. Simple as that.
